C4 Update

Happy Friday C4 Families!

One week back after Conferences and we have really hit the ground running!

This week we have been looking at organization strategies for our writing. Ask them about this...specifically they should know that thorough brainstorming and planning helps with writing great paragraphs.

In Math we began working on division. I handed out parent math strategy guides at conferences that highlight the methods I have shown them in class. If you have any questions about this please email me. :)

We will be talking about Native American tribes that lived in and around the Willamette Valley next week. A guest speaker will be visiting with some artifacts and activities. This should be an exciting presentation. Watch the class website for pictures from that day.

Thank you for your continued support at home with our RAH program. This year we have had almost 100% of students completing their reading every night. Starting for December our goal mins for each night will go up to 30 mins each night. This wont be a big deal for most because many students are already reading more than that anyway.

At conferences I talked about our new "Fast Falcon Facts" program. As a school we have decided to launch this in January. No worries though...your kiddos will be hard at work on Math over the winter break. I am working on training them how to use a new website called TenMarks. They will bring home login info soon. This website allows me to assign lesson for them to complete at home and I have told them that I will assign weekly homework over the break.

Holiday Crafts will begin next week and we are in need of a few more kids to bring in their light bulbs. Remember that they can be burnt out! :)

Upcoming in January:
I just received news that we will be having another student teacher starting in January. This student comes to us from Corban University and is a Junior. She will be completing a practicum in the area of Math. A practicum requires that she observe me teach for a minimum of 20 hours and that she teach a 10 unit lesson in Math. I will be observing all of her lessons and providing feedback. Practicums are not full time teaching, so I will always be with her in the room. In other words it is just like having an extra set of hands. I will encourage her to take over teaching more lessons as I feel she is ready but again she will always be supported by me. If you have any questions please email me. :)

Finally, as we enter the next two weeks of school I know that things begin to wind up for many families with regards to holiday events and excitement. For many students this can become a stressful time of the year. I am encouraging them to eat well, get lots of sleep and be sure they schedule some "down" time. Their daily reading works well for this. Thanks for your support at home so that we all enjoy a fun December at school.

Oh and have a great weekend!

"Vivid Vocabulary" Speech!

Vocabulary Master Requirements

Each student receives a word that is unique to them and must complete the following by Oct. 31st 2012:

·       Write the word in large block letters at the top of the paper (at least 2 inches high).
·       Color the word so it stands out.
·       Draw a picture showing a scene of what the word means in the middle portion of the paper. (3-D pictures will get you more points-use scrap booking supplies, cotton balls, popsicle sticks, construction paper, Cheerios, etc to make it stand out)
·       Write the definition of the word on the bottom portion of the page.
·       Write a sentence using your vocabulary word in context. Use your own words (not a copied sentence) also on the bottom of the page.
·       Practice saying your word, definition and sentence out loud so that you are prepared to share with the class.

**It is important to be neat, careful and try to be creative as you work on this project.  Not only will you be “the master” of this vocabulary word, but your classmates will be learning from you as well.

You will be scored in the following areas:
Definition (5)
Sentence (5)
Use of 3D (5)
Creativity (5)
Neatness (5)

**You will also be receiving a speech grade for your presentation of this word so practice sharing your poster and word several times at home so you are ready to share at school.

Have Fun!

The Writing Process

The writing process starts by brainstorming. Think of all the ideas that you can. Then you go to drafting. Also known as a sloppy copy. Write your story how you want it. Then revise it and check your work. It doesn't matter if you make mistakes cuz you can edit it in the next step. After you go through all of those steps you are ready for the final copy...After you finish your final copy you can hand it in to your teacher for a grade!
The writing process is AWESOME!

Classroom News!
What's been going on in C4

September was a great start to this school year! We all had the chance to get to know each other better and have worked out a great routine in the classroom. We covered routines for each content area and reviewed what they learned last year. We also began using ClassDojo! This management tool has been a great success in the room and is motivating everyone to work to their potential. I will be sending home Dojo reports every week so that you can discuss as a family possible behavior goals for the upcoming week.

October arrived quickly in C4 and we hit the ground running! Literally with the Jog-a-thon! Great job on collecting pledges and running hard that day. This month we have been reviewing multi-digit addition and subtraction in math. This week we moved into solving story problems. We will finish out the month working on multiplication strategies. In reading we have been reading both fiction and realistic fiction. We are learning to identify plot structure, character development and conflict resolution. In writing students have been writing personal narratives, stories about their own lives. They are working on publishing stories next week.

I will be updating the blog monthly with a short summary about what we are covering in class. I will also be having students share some of their work on the blog as well. So check back often to see what is going on in C4.
