Cells Project

Cell Project Name: __________________
Date Assigned: November 18, 2008
Date Due: Tuesday December 2nd, 2008

Dear C4 families, our class is zooming into the microscopic world of living cells as a part of our science curriculum, Unit 1: “Living Things”. We are working closely with technology to learn about the different parts of a cell and are discussing cells in class. However, to boost our tactile learning and family involvement, I am assigning the home project of building a cell model. I am going to leave the creativity up to the families, but here are some guidelines:
1. Please make the cell out of non food items (we don’t want any rotting cells in the class). Be creative. You can use wood, recycled materials, paper mache,
2. Choose between a plant and animal cell.
3. Include each of the following cell parts:
· Nucleus
· Cell Membrane
· Nuclear Membrane
· Cytoplasm
· Vacuoles

Extra Credit
· Lysosomes
· Golgi Bodies
· Endoplasmic Reticulum
· Mitochondria
4. For plant cell include
· Cell wall
· Chloroplasts
5. Please label each of the cell parts on your model using a key with a numbering or lettering system.
6. Finally on a separate piece of paper, explain in kid language how each cell part is important to the cell. (A good way to do this is to compare the cell part to something else in life.
For example:
Mitochondria: This is the cell’s power plant that supplies all the energy the cell needs.
This project will be a major part of Unit one’s science grade. There will also be a test on the cell parts. You may use the internet to help you with your research. Also check out our classroom blog. I have posted additional info and links. You have two weeks to complete your project. GOOD LUCK!

Mountain Man Visits C-4

Last week we had the opportunity to have a Mtn. Man come and share with the class about the time of the trappers. The class was very interested and enjoyed looking at all of the neat artifacts he brought in to share with us.

Pumkin Patch Field Trip

We had a great time on our trip to the Pumpkin Patch this year. The corn maze was "AMAZING"! Thank you to all of our volunteers for joining us and helping make our trip a huge success.
